When "Bad Ideas" debuted in Jan 2020 I also pressed a limited run of 300 copies on vinyl, complete with a digital download insert card (with a bonus track) and lyric sheet with this super cool rock octopus art ("rocktopus"). I did one show, sold a lot of them, and then good old Covid happened and I couldn't tour anymore. I have about 100 left, and I'd love for you to hear how this record sounds on vinyl. Also, the money you spend will just go right back into pressing my second album on vinyl as well, so every bit helps! Thanks, and I hope you enjoy this record in whatever way you want to listen to it!

FOLLOW THAT MAN (Dougherty) Oh yeah it’s easy to do a little bad Comes with all the best times I ever had It’s so tempting to turn your mirror round And live life without the disgrace Of having that familiar face to face I see my own reflection waiting for a train to come Good is slow, evil’s fast, how long am I supposed to last CHORUS You gotta follow that man, which way’s the hard way Follow that man, which way is the hard way now I don’t know Evil moves fast down a slippery slope Now stop, wait a minute, can I change directions I’m seeing no return Trying to do the right thing, I keep getting burned Kids are stretching pennies on a railroad track But if I can’t stretch this dollar bill I might as well Be laid out on my back Just me and all my pennies waiting for a train to come Good is slow, evil’s fast, how long am I supposed to last CHORUS I got that evil moving fast, how long am I supposed to last

Not Guilty! 03:34
NOT GUILTY! (Dougherty) Not guilty I said, but I did it anyway According to a jury of friends and family Not going back home where the wild winds blow Feeling like I live in a tornado And I wish that I’d done what they said that I’d done I even tried convincing myself When the wild wind blows through me Not guilty I said! Well I left without a thing ‘cuz I had no time to think It happened so fast, miss it if you blink Now I gotta go back when there’s no one in the house Cold collected creep, quiet as a mouse They didn’t change the locks, the door won’t open up I think they barricaded it using all my stuff When the wild wind blows through me Not guilty I said! And I wish that I’d done what they said that I’d done I even tried convincing myself I wish that I’d done what they said that I’d done The wild wind blows through me Not guilty ma, not guilty pa Not guilty, guilty, guilty at all Not guilty I said, doesn’t matter anyway The longest arm belongs to the law And they’ll do me in the morning, drag me outta bed Make sure that I’m washed, get me nice and fed I already have my last words in my mouth I’ll spit ‘em ‘til there’s not a dry eye in the house When the wild wind blows through me Not guilty I said!
3.
Bad Ideas 03:31
BAD IDEAS (Dougherty) How do you know I’m afraid of telepathy Are you reading my mind Now that it’s out in the open I got nothing to hide If you’re gonna let me know what you think of me Even if it ain’t kind It’s nice to know I’ve been crossing your mind CHORUS Baby I could tell you all my good ideas And show you I’m a really swell guy I would rather have a bad idea that you liked ‘Cuz I can do about anything you want from me Is that a bad idea? Is that a bad idea that you like? Got a laundry list of things that offended them That’s as long as my (hahahaha hahahahaha) I don’t care if we’re together, long as we’re not apart You tellin’ me you like a little fight in me And if it turns you on I’m all about it even though I tell you you’re wrong CHORUSWhat do you like, what don’t you like I got a couple little secrets and I know how to keep ‘em What do you like, what don’t you like There doesn’t have to be a reason As long as you can mean it I got those bad ideas you like CHORUS
4.
READY TO PLAY (Dougherty) Two left feet and she took a chance, I said “Give me a moment and I’ll learn to dance” Now it’s years later and I’m Fred Astaire Tracing my steps to get back there when it was You and me, careless and stupid A bow, an arrow and a match for Cupid No such thing as too much wine Shape of an hourglass and all the time in the world Spending days in our underwear And I loved it so much ‘cuz I didn’t care Now I’m Fred Astaire in The Royal Wedding Climbing the walls trying to catch that feeling again Running late looking for your keys And I check my reflection to try to see All the differences that come in time Tiny little changes that are telling me that I’m not The same and neither are you But there isn’t any mirror for what we’ve been through And it’s so perfect when it’s getting started Time is the pressure to test the heart And I know fighting you is fighting myself It’s a lonesome kind of work but don’t try to help I’m just Gene Kelly Singing In The Rain Swinging around trying to catch that feeling again CHORUS If it was easy it would be no fun Who would ever fall in love again But why’s it gotta be so damn hard A game that never ends But I’m all dressed up and I’m ready to play Brand new look but the same old face Even when I’m not in the mood for games Well I’m all dressed up to play, ready set go okay We were young and told to get over it Sometimes I wonder what I have to show for it I know we used to care a bit too much But every day I wonder if I’m losing touch Like the toes of a ballerina I’m a busted up beautiful machine From all the years spent thickening my skin To be as rough and tumble as the world we’re in But if I ever come across as callous All I need is you and I’m back to us And this time you can be the one to take my hand Ask me to dance and we’ll catch that feeling again CHORUS
5.
THIS LAND IS CURSED (Dougherty) Well it was tall grass when they found that girl Hanging as she left this world And it was farmland when that city boy Bought it up so he could work the earth And it’s been bad luck on this scrap of land And now they want to build a church CHORUSThis land is cursed, and there ain’t no way around it This land is cursed, you’re gonna leave it the way you found it But it’ll leave you a bad guy, a victim, a villain or worse This land is cursed Well it was not my fault the town burned down Didn’t leave that lantern on the ground And all those girls we thought were witches Well it was not my fault they drowned And I’m not to blame for all those kids Stacked up in the back of a hearse CHORUSAre you new in town, let me show you around Someone give ‘em a hand with those bags And help them out of those rags I got a plot of land to sell, you got an honest face So I’ll make you a deal, put your mark here first Don’t listen to those that say CHORUS
6.
Try It Again 05:21
Listen, try it again Is it good enough oh is it ever really good enough to stop? Is it good enough oh is it ever really gonna reach the top? Is it number one is it a perfect ten? Is it everything you’d ever want? Is anything left in the tank, is that all you got?
7.
Little Kiss 04:44
I was alarmed by all the ringing in my ears From my new headache, this one is different from The last one, truth be told I was faking it To get out of your party, you’re so busy celebrating That you didn’t see me disappear Guess I told a lie for nothing CHORUS Every now and then I steal a little Something that nobody would miss A stick of gum, a soda pop until I work up the nerve To steal a little kiss Under the glow of yellow moonlight no one sees us At this hour, and all the sweetness that we’re stealing In the morning will be sour, and it’s back to facing facts I figure the simple life is beckoning And every city slicker playing cowboy gets a reckoning CHORUS Another party and my friends are all debating Right and wrong, I can feel another headache Like the one that starts this song, and it’s killing me I want to scream out “why can’t you live and let live” And yet I stop myself because I know Some things you just can’t forgive CHORUS
8.
The One 05:32
THE ONE (Dougherty) Staring at the one who has my eyes And how many times are we that surprised Staring at the one who has my heart You’ll see the end but I saw the start Staring at the one who has my smile Wear it well it’ll never go out of style Staring at the one who has my soul It’s one more thing that I can’t control CHORUSOh, you got the best of me ‘Til there’s nothing left of me Staring at the one who has my laugh Split down the middle but not cut in half Staring at the one who has my mind You can leave without leaving me behind Staring at the one who’s almost grown And the day is coming when you’re on your own I can see you clearly in my memory But I can’t stop staring and you can’t make me CHORUS
9.
WHAT IS HAPPENING??? (Dougherty) If you’re scared so am I, but we look so alive Scared together makes it better tonight And I’m with you tonight Used to be black and white, and then I didn’t go anywhere So I swallowed my pride, and this great big world Opened wide, and I had to try CHORUS Is your hero shaking or is there something wrong With your eyes? You look once and you look twice And your hero is shaking the hand of the baddest man alive And you’re on your own tonight Used to walk up to anyone and say (What is happening) Anyone at all, shake their hand, say (what is happening) And it’s easy to do when no one thinks that much of you But now I’m grown, now I’m someone to use So when people are too nice I wonder (what is...) Shaking hands with a stranger like we’re good old friends (what is...) And maybe we are but I’ve been so wrong before Am I right? Am I too black and white? CHORUS
10.
THE MONEY IS BETTER IN HEAVEN (Dougherty) Nine to five, maybe nine to nine, tap my foot killing time Maybe I should’ve been a dancer Something more, something less, could be worse, Could be best, could be I don’t have an answer PRE-CHORUS Does it all go away in the end, like a bullet to the head? Does it all go away in the end, do I need you, need you Need you right now, I need you now CHORUS The money is better in heaven, the benefits are better in hell But I don’t wanna work no more Is it better to be black and white or see both sides so much You never fight for anything you like Nine to five one more time, one more nickel for a dime Get home and everybody’s sleeping But I’m not all alone, got me my very own thoughts Safe for the keeping PRE-CHORUS AND CHORUS Is it better to be crippled by the crutches or just Hop out on the good foot one step at a time The money might be better up in heaven, I don’t care The benefits might be better down in hell, I don’t care I worked when I loved it, worked when I hated it I just wanna know what it’s like to stop

about

After fronting and writing for several Chicago based bands (On The Off Chance, Workhorse Kings, Master of None) I finally recorded my first solo album Bad Ideas. With the help of some of my favorite performers I finally felt completely in the driver's seat creatively and the result are these tracks which mix my love of storytelling with musical styles that range from pop rock to eerie and off-kilter alternative and americana. I hope you enjoy the record, and be on the lookout for my follow-up album Fun Times Ahead in 2021.
